Fort Everdingen Visitor Centre
A visitor building tucked into the earthworks of a 19th-century fort, so the fort stays the largest thing on site.
Client
Staatsbosbeheer
Location
Everdingen, NL
Year
2023
Area
1,180 m²
Typology
Cultural
Status
Completed
Staatsbosbeheer needed a visitor centre at a 19th-century fort without putting a new building on the skyline of a protected earthwork.
The building is cut into the flank of the earthwork and roofed in grass, so from the water the fort still reads as a fort. Only the entrance and a single long window are visible from the approach path.
Opened 2023. It handles 78,000 visitors a year from a footprint that is invisible in every heritage sightline the consent process protected.
