Brief

Brief

Staatsbosbeheer needed a visitor centre at a 19th-century fort without putting a new building on the skyline of a protected earthwork.

Approach

Approach

The building is cut into the flank of the earthwork and roofed in grass, so from the water the fort still reads as a fort. Only the entrance and a single long window are visible from the approach path.

Outcome

Outcome

Opened 2023. It handles 78,000 visitors a year from a footprint that is invisible in every heritage sightline the consent process protected.
